I’m quite glad I stumbled on this piece. I’ve been interested in surrealism for a while and I remember first coming across Bekinski in 2020 during the first few months of the pandemic. At the time people were re-discovering all art and culture with post-communist, brutalist influences from Eastern Europe.

People were idealising half a continent based on “vibes” matching the dread of the pandemic. Ignorant to the recent history of these locations (e.g. People posting videos of dying their armpit hair to the song ‘Sudno’ inspired by the poems of a suicidal poet). Besides my distaste for social media pumping history and culture into its typical attention-grabbing, money-making schemes. I just find it interesting how people find art or artists with works so intricately related to the experiences of a generation.
